Best Engine

We spend lot of time trying to choose between gasoline engine and diesel engines for our cars, SUVs and trucks. However, there was a time when finding the best engine for your automobile would have involved checking vehicles with
  • Steam engines
  • Electric engines and
  • Internal combustion engines
  1. Gasoline engines
  2. Diesel engines.

Engine technology has come a long way. Electrical engines were very popular in the beginning and now are becoming popular in hybrid cars that are fitted with electric motors that work with gas engines to improve fuel efficiency without compromising on performance and power. It is difficult to identify who invented the first motor engine. If engine is to be defined as a contraption that enables any object to move without application of manual force, then there have been instances of such objects being invented in the 16th and 17th century as well. However, for all practical purposes, Otto is credited to have invented the most practical and most saleable four stroke engine. The Otto cycle made it possible for car makers to make powerful and safe cars.

Steam engine lost out from the list of best engines primarily due to safety fears. Further, steam engines cannot compete with the temperature generated in an internal combustion engine. Steam engines were relegated to ships and railway wagons but could not become a part of the automobile industry. We spend lot of time trying to choose between gasoline engine and diesel engines for our cars, SUVs and trucks. However, there was a time when finding the best engine for your automobile would have involved checking vehicles with - Steam engines - Electric engines and - Internal combustion engines 1 Gasoline engines 2 Diesel engines.

There is no specific reason why electrical engines lost out. Automobile manufacturer chose to invest time and effort into development of internal combustion engines over electrical engines. Automobiles were considered as a thing of sport and enjoyment in the first decade of the 20th century. Early inventors never imagined that millions of people would one day rely on automobiles to travel all over the world. For very long time, it remained something that only the rich could afford and even then would be used only for sport and enjoyment than for practical use.

For a very long time, power and safety was the priority of automobile engine manufacturers. This was even more important for truck makers. The cars designed in the early fifties and sixties were loaded with aesthetics improvements. Powerful engines were required to ensure heavy vehicles could be driven at high speeds. The early seventies saw fuel cost rising beyond all previous levels. This led to increase in preference for diesel engines over petrol engines. The 80's and the 90's saw increasing emphasis on the pollution factor. Engines became quieter, more powerful, more efficient and smaller even as cars became smaller and more stylish. Today, computer chips are being fitted to the cars to regulate the technical aspects of the engine to improve mileage and performance.

Manufacturing quality too has improved by leaps and bounds. Earlier vehicles suffered engine breakdowns on a regular basis. Today, an engine failure is considered very rare. Even in such a scenario, one can fit any auto salvage engine that will easily run for a few more hundred thousand miles before breaking down.
